Knight Does it All In Cardinal Win Over Cougars, 81-61

STANFORD, Calif. -- Brevin Knight had 17 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and seven steals, leading 17th-ranked Stanford to an 81-61 romp over Washington State, 81-61, in a Pac-10 Conference matchup.

Tim Young led all scorers with 19 points and pulled down nine rebounds for Stanford (13-3, 6-2 Pac-10), which moved within a half-game of first-place UCLA.

"These were two important home wins," Stanford coach Mike Montgomery. "We need these, even if it wasn't artistic at times. Washington State is a great team, especially (Isaac) Fontaine."

Peter Sauer scored 10 of his 14 points in the first half for the Cardinal, who led at halftime, 43-31.

Carlos Daniel scored 17 points and Fontaine added 16 for Washington State (10-8, 2-5), which still leads the series, 51-44.

"It is rather obvious the better team won in terms of number of players and quality of players," Washington State coach Kevin Eastman said. "(Stanford) is better than Georgia and would beat Michigan, which we played. To this point, this is the best team we have played."

Mark Madsen had nine points and eight rebounds for Stanford, which outrebounded the Cougars, 46-35, and held them to 39 percent shooting (23-of-59) from the field.

The Cardinal used an 11-0 run to open a commanding 60-42 lead midway through the second half. After Fontaine made one free throw to close WSU within 49-42 with 15:36 left to go, Young converted a three-point play to spark the burst. Rich Jackson had all five of his points in the surge and Madsen made a free throw to give Stanford an 18-point bulge with 11:45 to go.

Stanford improved to 6-0 at home this season.
