LOS ANGELES -- Stais Boseman scored 23 points to lead a balanced attack asSouthern California held off 18th-ranked Stanford, 84-81, in aPac-10 battle, creating a four-way tie atop the conference.

"We just want to be a complete team that plays hard, that has discipline and is a smart team," said Rhodes. "We want some respect. We've got to understand, we're this close, we're right there. What I try to do is be the leader."

Boseman made the first of two free throws with 5.4 seconds left, leaving the door open for the Cardinal to tie. After Stanford(13-5, 6-4) called timeout, Kris Weems inbounded the ball toBrevin Knight, who missed badly on a three-pointer from the leftcorner at the buzzer.

"I wasn't frustrated, we just weren't in sync," said Knight, who finished with 16 points and seven assists. "We weren't all on the same page. I couldn't tell you why, but it just wasn't there."

"It was a disappointing, discouraging, we were just so bad tostart the game," said Stanford coach Mike Montgomery. "We absolutely weren't ready to play. They made a lot of key plays down the stretch and we didn't make very many."

USC opened its largest lead, 48-36, after a layup by DavidCrouse 47 seconds into the second half. But Young keyed a 13-4run with six points and Stanford closed within 52-49 on a layupby Mark Madsen with 15:02 left.

USC used a 14-4 run to take a 24-10 lead midway through thefirst half after a layup by Rhodes. The Trojans maintained atleast a nine-point lead the rest of the half after shooting15-of-27 from the field.

"As long as we do a few things, we're OK," said Trojans coach Henry Bibby. "We're not looking around and seeing where we are. We were able to maintain the lead and then go basket to basket with them and win the game."
