Young, NO. 23 Cardinal Finish Regular Season on Winning Note, 86-63
STANFORD, Calif. -- Tim Young scored 19 of his 23 points in the first half and pulled down 16 rebounds as 23rd-ranked Stanford cruised to an 86-63 victory over Arizona State in the Pac-10 Conference finale for both schools.
Brevin Knight added 21 points and eight assists for the Cardinal (20-7, 12-6 Pac-10), who never trailed and led at halftime, 47-29. Stanford is expected to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
"Well, we did what we needed to do tonight," said Stanford coach Mike Montgomery. "We knew that Arizona State was struggling a little bit, but we could not afford to lose this game."
Stanford completed a perfect season at home, while the loss kept the Sun Devils winless on the road.
Jeremy Veal and Eddie House each had 14 points and seven rebounds for Arizona State (10-20, 2-15).
Stanford finished in a three-way tie for second with California and Southern California. The Cardinal split with both teams during the regular season.
"I thought we had a real good season with only seven losses," Montgomery added. "The homecourt, with the fans, made it fun for us. Now we just to have see what happens. There's no point in speculating until we see the board tomorrow. We did about everything we could do to make the tournament. Now it's in the hands of the committee."
The Cardinal, who never trailed, saw their lead cut to 14-11 after an 18-footer by Veal with 11:49 left in the first half. But Stanford put the game out of reach with a 12-2 run as Knight poured in three three-pointers around a tip-in by Arizona State's Urit Kelly and a three-pointer by teammate Ryan Mendez to give the Cardinal a 26-13 lead with at the 9:11 mark.
Arizona State came no closer than 10 points the rest of the half and the Cardinal opened up their largest lead with 3:18 to play after Kris Weems hit a jumper to make it 84-48.
Stanford finished at 48.6 percent (34-for-70) from the field and got 25 points from its bench. The Cardinal mauled the Sun Devils on the board with a 53-32 advantage.
Mike Batiste and Ahlon Lewis had nine points each for Arizona State, which shot 37 percent (25-for-68).
