Corey Benjamin Leads Beavers to Upset of No. 15 Cardinal, 86-77
CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Corey Benjamin scored 26 points, Ron Grady had 24 and CarsonCunningham added 18 to lift Oregon State to an 86-77 upset ofnumber 15 Stanford in the Pac-10 Conference.
Oregon State (5-9, 1-4 Pac-10) broke its five-game losing streakbehind Benjamin, who has 57 points in his last two games. Itwas the first conference win for the Beavers since a 56-54victory over USC on March 2nd, 1996.
Brevin Knight had 16 points and eight assists before fouling outfor Stanford (11-3, 4-2), which lost to Oregon State for thesecond time in the last seven meetings between the schools andfell to 37-64 all-time against the Beavers.
Stanford had its three-game winning streak halted and fell agame behind UCLA for the top spot in the Pac-10.
The trio of Benjamin, Grady -- who came off the bench -- andCunningham combined for 68 of Oregon State's 86 points (79percent). No other Beaver scored more than five points or tookfive shots.
Oregon State shot 52 percent (29-of-56) as a team, with the triogoing 22-of-39 (56 percent). Benjamin was 6-of-9 fromthree-point range and Grady was 2-of-5 while Cunningham went14-of-17 from the foul line.
Stanford built a 39-34 halftime lead behind Peter Sauer's 10points, but Benjamin's three-pointer with 16:28 left gave theBeavers a 44-43 lead.
There were eight lead changes and four ties before Grady'srunning jumper with 5:29 left gave the Beavers the lead forgood, 66-65. Benjamin followed with a dunk and Knight made twofree throws before two free throws by Cunningham, a jumper byGrady and two more free throws by Cunningham opened the lead to74-67 with 94 seconds to go.
Stanford center Tim Young was limited to five points, fiverebounds and committed six of Stanford's 13 turnovers. TheCardinal, who got 15 points and nine rebounds from Peter Sauerand 14 points from Kris Weems, shot just 38 percent (23-of-61)from the field.
