MacCulloch, Washington Defeat No. 23 Cardinal in the Emerald City, 73-61

SEATTLE -- Todd MacCulloch had a personal 8-0 run at the start of the second half and finished with 24 points as Washington upended 23rd-ranked Stanford, 73-61, in a Pac-10 Conference battle.

Mark Sanford added 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Huskies (15-8, 8-6 Pac-10), who helped their chances for receiving an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Washington also defeated Arizona at home earlier this season.

Kris Weems scored 12 points and Mark Madsen added 10 for Stanford (16-7, 9-6), which had a three-game winning streak snapped. The Cardinal, who play their final three conference games at home, finished 3-6 in road conference games.

Stanford point guard Brevin Knight, who averages 16.3 points per game, was held to eight points on 3-of-16 shooting.

Washington holds a 53-51 lead in the all-time series, but won for just the second time in the last eight games between the schools.

With the scored tied 31-31 entering the second half, MacCulloch got things going with a layup and 10-footer in the first 66 seconds. He added another layup and a putback that gave Washington a 39-31 lead with 17:45 to play, forcing Stanford to call timeout.

"We wanted to establish ourselves inside, and we were going to keep the floor spread and let him (MacCulloch) work," said Washington coach Bob Bender. "Our guys passed him the ball in good position and he went and finished."

"Todd needed a game that he could go out and make a statement, also just confidence-wise, against a guy like Tim Young, because he's played against him for so long," added Bender.

Jan Wooten extended the run to 11-0 with a three-pointer before closing it with a free throw to give the Huskies a 43-31 edge with 15:21 to play. Stanford responded with a 9-3 burst, drawing within 46-40 on Mark Seaton's free throw with 12:03 remaining.

But the Huskies put the game out of reach with a 9-1 tear of their own. Jamie Booker had two layups around a free throw by Peter Sauer. MacCulloch had a follow shot before Sanford canned a three-pointer to make it 55-41 with 8:20 left. The Cardinal were unable to draw within single digits down the stretch.

Washington shot 47 percent (26-of-55) from the field and held a 17-8 edge at the foul line. Wooten finished with 14 points and Booker added 10 and eight rebounds.

"For the third straight game, Jamie's done an unbelievable job defensively on the key on the (defensive) end and that was certainly big tonight," said Bender.

Stanford shot just 31 percent (11-of-36) in the second half and 36 percent (25-of-69) overall. The Cardinal were outrebounded 49-33 and made just 3-of-19 three-point shots.

Stanford coach Mike Montgomery opted to bench Young after just 13 minutes. Young, who is averaging 14.1 points and 8.1 rebounds, had six points and three rebounds.

"He was obviously struggling on offense, and having a tough time on MacCulloch," said Stanford coach Mike Montgomery. "To be honest with you, I felt at that point that we needed to come out and try something else."
