Stanford Places Three on Junior World Cup Team
Stanford, CA - Three Stanford players were selected to participate on the 1997 U.S. Junior World Cup Team, the most by any one school in the country. Sarah Medeiros (Davis, CA), Carey Cloyd (Houston, TX) and Justina Williams (San Jose, CA) join 18 other U.S. athletes for the competition, which runs from September 1-14, 1997 at the Olympic Stadium in Seoul, South Korea.
"I am extremely proud and excited that these three players have been selected to play on the Junior World Cup Team," said Stanford head coach Sheryl Johnson. "Their selection really speaks to the strength of our program and their dedication to field hockey."
Cloyd, who led the Stanford team last year in scoring with six goals and five assists, was named to the 1996 All-NorPac team and earned Regional All-American honors in 1996. Medeiros, a junior this season, is a 1996 All-NorPac member, after posting two goals and three assists in 1996. A junior midfielder, Williams also joins the Junior World Cup team after two successful seasons on The Farm.
All three will travel to Seoul in late August and will miss the first part of the Stanford season, but are expected to return by the team's trip to St. Louis.
