Stanford Outlasts Oregon in shootout, 58-49

Chad Hutchinson threw four touchdown passes, two to TroyWalters, and Anthony Bookman ran for two scores 22nd-rankedStanford outlasted Oregon, 58-49, in a wild Pac-10 Conferencebattle.

Stanford (3-1, 2-0 Pac-10) had a 41-35 lead entering the fourthquarter and extended it when Bookman scored on a nine-yard run.Hutchinson connected with Damon Dunn for the two-pointconversion and a 49-35 cushion.

Oregon (3-1,1-1), which battled from behind all night, gotwithin seven when Jason Maas connected for his fifth touchdownpass, a three-yarder to fullback A.J. Jelks.

The Cardinal appeared to put the game away on their nextpossession when Mike Mitchell scored from three yards out tomake it 56-42.

Derien Latimer ran three yards for a TD that brought the Duckswithin 56-49, but the verdict was not assured until Stanfordpunter Kevin Miller pinned Oregon at the 1-yard line with 18seconds remaining and defensive end Kailee Wong sacked Maas fora safety.

Oregon took the lead early in the first quarter when Maas foundPat Johnson for a 66-yard score.

Stanford roared back as Hutchinson threw touchdown passes of 23yards to Walters, nine yards to Jon Ritchie and 80 yards toDunn.

The second quarter was just as wild as the first. The Ducks cutthe lead to 21-14 when backup Akili Smith hit Kevin Parker from35 yards out. Bookman's 67-yard scoring run put the Cardinalback up by 14 before Hutchinson found Walters again, this timefor a 31-yard score.

Maas brought Oregon back in the final minute of the half,hitting Tony Hartley for a four-yard score and connecting withJohnson for a 47-yard TD seven seconds later to cut the lead to35-28. The second score was set up when Stanford fumbled thekickoff.

The Cardinal extended the lead to 41-28 in the third quarter ona pair of field goals by Kevin Miller before Oregon came backagain as Maas found LaCorey Collins for a four-yard score.
