EUGENE, Ore. - Stanford starter Dean McArdle fanned six but gave up five earned runs in 3.0 innings as the 14th-ranked Cardinal dropped a 6-4 decision Saturday at Oregon. Oregon clinched the Pac-12 Conference baseball series in front of a near-sellout PK Park crowd to snap Stanford's streak of four straight series victories.
McArdle (2-2) shouldered the loss after scattering seven hits, including a two-run homer in the first by Ryon Healy.
Stanford (23-14 overall, 9-8 Pac-12) answered with a run in the second. Alex Blandino followed Danny Diekroeger's single with a double to left, which got away from Brett Thomas to buy time for Diekroeger to score.
Thomas made up for it in the home half with an RBI single up the middle.
Healy, who finished 3-for-3 with four RBI, belted a three-run homer in the fourth to give Oregon a 6-1 lead.
Logan James went 5.0 innings in relief for the Cardinal and held the seventh-ranked Ducks to three hits and one earned run. James struck out four with a pair of walks.
The Ducks were out-hit by Stanford, 11-10, and committed three errors.
Drew Jackson drove in a run and Austin Slater tacked on an RBI single to help Stanford pull within 6-3 through five.
Slater scored an unearned run in the seventh.
Stanford left two stranded in the eighth and had the tying run at the plate in the ninth. Jimmie Sherfy blanked the Cardinal in the final 2.0 innings on one hit.
The win went to Cole Irvin (8-2), whose 7.0 innings yielded four runs - two earned - on 10 hits.
Diekroeger, Blandino and Wayne Taylor had two hits apiece to lead Stanford.
The series concludes at 12:30 p.m. (PT) on Sunday. The contest will be televised on ESPNU.
