STANFORD, Calif. - Tommy Nance twirled a shutout and scattered six hits to steer visiting Santa Clara to a 3-0 win over Stanford. The complete-game effort was flanked by six strikeouts Tuesday as the Broncos handed the Cardinal its sixth straight loss.
Nance (3-4) kept the Cardinal without an extra-base hit for just the third time this season, a feat also accomplished by Santa Clara (13-37) during a March 5 meeting between the two programs which Stanford won, 6-4.
The Cardinal looks to rebound from its six-game skid with a three-game Pac-12 Conference baseball series this weekend at Cal (May 17-19).
Justin Ringo had two hits for Stanford (26-21), which suffered its first midweek non-conference shutout at Sunken Diamond since 2007.
Stanford did not put a runner in scoring position until the eighth. The Cardinal used singles from Wayne Taylor and Ringo though left each stranded.
Santa Clara scored one run in both the third and fourth innings off Cardinal starter Bobby Zarubin (3-3). Zarubin was responsible for two earned runs and four hits. He also fanned a pair.
Jordan Kutzer and Garrett Hughes combined to blank the Broncos for four frames following Zarbuin's four-inning effort. A.J. Vanegas walked in an unearned ninth-inning run and struck out two in the last stanza. Logan James recorded the final Santa Clara out and left three Broncos on base.
Santa Clara left 10 runners on the pond and did not commit an error. Drew Jackson committed an error in the ninth which led to the visitor's unearned tally.
Zach Looney and T.J. Braff had two hits apiece for Santa Clara, which totaled seven on the night.
