TEMPE, Ariz. - Senior RHP Mark Appel had 13 strikeouts in 7.2 innings to lead Stanford to a 5-3 series-opening win over Arizona State Friday at Packard Stadium.
Appel (8-3) scattered five hits and allowed three runs - two earned - as the 22nd-ranked Cardinal improved to 25-15 overall and 10-9 against Pac-12 Conference opponents.
Appel registered double-digit strikeouts for the 22nd time in his career and struck out the side in the second, fifth and sixth innings. The All-American fanned seven in a row in the late stages of the game.
No. 8 Arizona State (29-13-1, 11-8) saw starter Trevor Williams (5-4) take the loss after he gave up five earned runs on nine hits in 6.0 innings.
Williams allowed seven runs on 11 hits with two strikeouts during in his 2012 start against the Cardinal.
Lonnie Kauppila had three of Stanford's 12 hits and scored twice.
Austin Wilson bounced a two-RBI single up the middle to make it 2-0 and Danny Diekroeger singled through the left side for Stanford's third run in the third.
Wilson also had a two-RBI single with the bases loaded during Tuesday's midweek win over St. Mary's.
Appel kept Arizona State hitless until the third.
Justin Ringo and Austin Slater each had an RBI in the fourth to give Appel his largest cushion to work with on the season, 5-0.
In the home half of the fourth, a leadoff single paved the way for Trevor Allen to snap the shutout with a two-RBI double.
A seventh-inning error opened the door for the Sun Devils to score their third run.
Appel's only walk loaded the bases in seventh as Arizona State pulled within a pair, 5-3, with Kasey Coffman's sacrifice fly.
Garrett Hughes got through a dicey eighth, leaving a pair of Sun Devils stranded to help secure his third save. Arizona State had the tying run at plate one inning later before Hughes shut the door on the home team.
Game two of the series begins at 6:30 p.m. (PT) on Saturday.
