TEMPE, Ariz. - No. 8 Arizona State hit back-to-back-to-back home runs as part of an eight-run second inning to hand visiting Stanford an 11-8 loss in the Pac-12 Conference baseball series finale Sunday at Packard Stadium.
Arizona State built a 10-2 lead through four innings, with Stanford rattling off five unanswered runs to make it a 10-7 game in the seventh. Stanford left seven runners stranded over the last four stanzas.
Stanford (26-16 overall, 11-10 Pac-12), which won games one and two to clinch the series, was denied its first three-game sweep at Arizona State since 1995.
Now 0-5 on the season in getaway games, the 22nd-ranked Cardinal returns home to play host to USF at 5:30 p.m. (PT) on Tuesday.
Stanford opened the game by putting two on base without an out but came away fruitless. Justin Ringo had a leadoff single for the third straight game. Arizona State (30-14-1, 12-9) stranded two in its half.
Ringo added another single one inning later during Stanford's two-run spurt. Dominic Jose scored from third on a wild pitch and Lonnie Kauppila's infield grounder bought enough time for Alex Blandino to cross.
Dean McArdle surrendered three home runs in the second after relieving Cardinal starter John Hochstatter (3-2), who lasted 1.2 innings and was charged with five earned runs on six hits.
McArdle also gave up five earned runs on six hits and added six walks to his ledger.
Arizona State got 5.0 innings from Zak Miller (4-0), who surrendered three earned runs on seven hits. The Sun Devils' bullpen walked six.
The Sun Devils got their ninth run on a Michael Benjamin sacrifice fly. Kasey Coffman's RBI single in the fourth made it 10-2.
Brian Ragira doubled and scored on a Danny Diekroeger fifth-inning single. Stanford cut Arizona State's lead to 10-4 on Austin Slater's bouncer over first base in the top of the sixth.
Diekroeger and Ringo each had two hits. Arizona State and Stanford had 13 knocks apiece.
Austin Barr's first career home run - a three-run shot - capped off a 4-0 Cardinal run to trim the Arizona State lead to 10-7. It was the third hit for Barr in 16 at-bats. Copper State native Zach Hoffpauir had his second career hit earlier in the seventh.
