STANFORD, Calif. - Alex Blandino had two sacrifice flies but No. 19 Stanford could not overcome a three-run fourth by USF and fell to the visiting Dons, 4-3. Blandino had a team-high two RBI and Danny Diekroeger scored twice. Diekroeger had two hits along with Brian Ragira, Austin Wilson and Wayne Taylor.
Justin Ringo notched a leadoff single for the fourth straight game.
The Cardinal fell to 26-17 overall after dropping its second midweek contest on the season Tuesday at Sunken Diamond.
USF (30-19) used seven pitchers, none of which lasted longer than starter Andrew Pulido, who gave up two earned runs on four hits in 2.1 innings. Adam Cimber earned his eighth save and allowed one hit in the final 1.2 frames.
USF out-hit Stanford, 12-9.
Bobby Zarubin fell to 3-2 in the midweek start, permitting nine hits and four earned runs. David Schmidt did not allow a score and held USF to three hits in 4.0 frames. Garrett Hughes was perfect in the ninth.
USF took its lead on consecutive second-inning doubles. Stanford turned around and got a sacrifice fly from Blandino and a Taylor RBI double to bump ahead, 2-1.
After a scoreless third, USF tacked on three runs on four errors in the fourth. Again, Stanford answered with a run in the bottom half on Blandino's second sacrifice fly.
Derek Atkinson paced the Dons with three hits.
The Dons had three hits and were issued a walk in the fifth but came away without a run.
The Cardinal begins its three-game league series with Oregon State at 6:30 p.m. (PT) on Friday.
