HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. – Stanford tied for third at the Windy City Collegiate Championship held Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at Northmoor Country Club. The women’s golf squad posted respective rounds of 287-280-290 as it tied with Pac-12 Conference foe Arizona at 5-over par 857.
Leading the way at the par-71, 6,108-yard track was USC (+1), who finished ahead of second-place Oklahoma State (+3) and the Cardinal among the 15-team field.
“This was a terrific event for us. We played consistently from start to finish,” said Anne Walker, Stanford’s Margot and Mitch Milias Director of Women's Golf. “We posted the low score today in very trying conditions. USC is arguably one of the best teams women’s golf has ever seen; to finish only four back of them gives us a ton of confidence early in the season.”
Lauren Kim (75-68-69) tied for fourth with a 1-under 212. Kim entered the third round tied for 14th and moved up 10 spots with a 2-under.
“Lauren Kim was our star this week,” Walker said. “She was 4-over for her first nine holes and then 5-under for her final 45 holes. She finished with three straight birdies today on holes 14 through 16, and that was clutch play.”
Kim, who double bogeyed the second hole in her opening round, birdied the 150-yard, par-3 in the second round while going on shoot a team-low 68. Kim was 1-over during her final round before collecting three straight birdies after a bogey on the par-3 13th to finish 2-under at 69, 10 strokes below the tournament’s third-round average.
Kim tallied 10 birdies over her final 45 holes.
Mariko Tumangan (70-73-72), whose 2-over 215 was good for a tie for seventh, started the tournament 2-under through three holes and was even heading into the turn. She went on to shelve an opening-round 70. Tumangan was 2-under on the tournament on both the par-5 third and par-4 10th.
Mariah Stackhouse (71-71-74) tied for ninth at 3-over (216). Stackhouse followed two even rounds with a 3-over third circuit.
“Mariko and Mariah showed that once again they are the core of our lineup,” Walker said. “Both finished in the top 10 and played very well from tee to green.”
Freshman Casey Danielson (71-72-78) tied for 29th with a 221. Danielson was 1-over heading into the final round but could not overcome a 6-over on the front nine of her third round, with five-straight bogeys before the turn.
Danielson’s classmate, Quirine Eijkenboom (82-69-75) tied for 47th (226). Eijenkenboom responded from an opening-round 82 with a stellar 69, staying even in the second round until dropping birdies on the 12th and 18th holes. Eijkenboom birdied the par-5 18th three times in as many tries.
“It was great to have two freshmen in our young lineup,” Walker said. “Each of them contributed at a high level and will give us a great outlook for the future."
Stanford resumes action next week at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational (Oct. 8-9) in Redmound, Wash.
