STANFORD, Calif.- Hope Burke’s second multi-goal game of the year lifted No. 13 Stanford to a 5-0 shutout of UC Davis on Friday night at the Varsity Turf.
Stanford (9-3, 3-1 NorPac) controlled the game from start to finish, owning a 23-2 edge in shots and 8-0 advantage in penalty corners.
More importantly, the Cardinal avenged a 3-2 overtime loss to UC Davis (3-8, 1-1 NorPac) five days ago on the road.
Dulcie Davies registered her fifth shutout of the year, thanks to a strong effort from the Cardinal defense.
Courtney Haldeman opened the game’s scoring just 1:10 into the first half, redirecting a strong feed from Alex McCawley to the right corner of the cage. Stanford carried the momentum of the early goal throughout the opening period, outshooting the Aggies 9-1.
Burke gave the Cardinal some breathing room just before halftime, knocking in her first goal of the game after Maddie Secco made a couple of nice moves on the left side of the cage to evade defenders and deliver the assist.
Stanford continued to apply the pressure in the second half, maintaining a majority of the possession and holding a 14-1 shot advantage.
Clemence Couteau was the first Cardinal to find the back of the net in the second half, tapping in a rebound directly in front of the cage off a shot by McCawley. Burke followed with her second of the night and team-leading seventh goal of the season less than 10 minutes later when she redirected a strong pass from Elise Ogle to the top right corner of the cage.
Already with an assist and two shots on goal, McCawley added the fifth Stanford goal in the 69th minute with a highlight-reel shot. Positioned just inside the circle on the right side, McCawley ripped a shot to the top left corner of the cage.
The Cardinal will look to carry its momentum into Sunday as it hosts Yale at 12 p.m. at the Varsity Turf.
