Stanford Downed by Blue Devils

DURHAM, N.C. - No. 13 Stanford was unable to overcome a late goal by No. 8 Duke in a tightly contested affair Sunday, eventually falling to the Blue Devils, 2-0.

A goal in the 59th minute by Duke's (11-4, 2-2 ACC) Amanda Kim was enough to give the Blue Devils the victory. It was the first goal Stanford allowed in four games after shutting out its previous three opponents, a streak spanning 276:59.

Jessica Buttinger added a second goal for Duke just before the end of regulation at 69:40, scoring an empty-netter as Stanford (11-4, 3-1 NorPac) pulled its goalie to try to tie the match.

Stanford held advantages in shots (6-4) and corners (3-2) in the first half but was unable to find the back of the cage. The Cardinal was outshot 11-4 and the Blue Devils held a 6-1 penalty corner advantage in the second half.

Stanford opened the game on the offensive, firing three of its six first-half shots in the opening seven minutes. The pace evened out throughout the half as both teams traded opportunities.

The Cardinal had its chances to score early in the second half but was unable to convert. Duke took control in the latter portion of the half, including an eight minute stretch in which the Blue Devils had five consecutive penalty corners and five shots – with Kim scoring on Duke’s final opportunity.

Dulcie Davies made four saves in goal for the Cardinal.

Stanford will look to regroup as it plays host to No. 19 Michigan and Pacific in its final homestand of the season next weekend. The Michigan game will be televised live on the Pac-12 Network.
