Lucky Number 13

STANFORD, Calif. - Shannon Herold became the 13th Stanford player to score at least one goal this season, lifting the Cardinal to a 1-0 overtime victory Friday at California.

Herold’s goal at 73:28 gave Stanford (14-4, 5-1 NorPac) its third consecutive victory and fifth win in a row over the Golden Bears (6-11, 2-4 NorPac).

After earning a penalty corner three minutes into the first overtime period, Kelsey Harbin received the initial pass on the right side of the cage from Maddie Secco. Harbin paused for a second after settling the pass and slid the ball to Herold on the left side of the circle. Herold elevated the shot just enough to beat Cal’s goalkeeper to the right corner of the cage and secure the victory.

Much of the game was played in the midfield as both teams battled to maintain possession. The Cardinal outshot Cal 8-4, while the Golden Bears held a 4-3 penalty corner edge.

Stanford’s defense played well, limiting the Golden Bears to two shots per half and just one shot on its four penalty corner opportunities.

Dulcie Davies made three saves, including two stops late in the second half, to keep Cal off the board and earn her ninth shutout on the year.

Stanford will pursue its sixth NorPac Tournament title in the past seven seasons when it travels to Lynchburg, Va., on Nov. 7-9.
