STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 23 Stanford wrestling team (4-0) remained undefeated on the season with a 17-16 win over 15th-ranked Maryland (3-1), Saturday in what the team referred to as the MEGABOWL, at Burnham Pavilion in Stanford, Calif. The dual ended in a 16-16 tie, but by criteria of total match points (63-57) the Cardinal gained the edge overall.
Stanford and Maryland each won five bouts on the day. Leading the Cardinal was redshirt freshman Jim Wilson with a 15-2 major decision at 165 pounds.
Maryland took a 3-0 lead in the dual, which began at 141 pounds, as Shyheim Brown secured a 7-0 decision over Peter Russo. However, the Cardinal responded by capturing wins in the next three bouts to take a 10-3 advantage over the Terrapins.
Redshirt freshman Maxwell Hvolbek got things going for Stanford with a thrilling 7-5 comeback win over Frank Goodwin at 149 pounds. No. 17 Bret Baumbach then posted a 7-1 decision over Ben Dorsay at 157 pounds to give the Cardinal the lead. Wilson increased Stanford’s lead to 10-3 in the dual with his major decision.
Maryland then won the next four bouts to regain the lead, 16-10. At 174 pounds, Tony Gardner escaped with a 7-6 win over Stanford redshirt freshman Zach Nevills in double overtime.
Stanford sophomore Evan Silver, ranked No. 9 at 125 pounds, cut the Maryland lead to 16-13 with a commanding 7-1 decision against Billy Rappo.
Redshirt senior Ryan Mango, ranked No. 3 nationally, tied up the final score with a 12-8 decision over Tyler Goodwin at 133 pounds, forcing the tiebreaking criteria to come into play.
Up next, Stanford travels to Fresno, Calif., for the Roadrunner Open on Sunday, Nov. 17. The Cardinal will then head to the Midwest for duals at Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan on Nov. 24-25.
