Final Stop Falls Short

EVANSTON, Ill. – In its final dual of the 2013-14 season, the Stanford wrestling was edged 20-19 at 10th-ranked Northwestern, Sunday, at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill. The Cardinal finishes the regular season with a 17-5 overall record, the most wins in program history.

Stanford won four of the 10 bouts on Sunday, receiving bonus points from redshirt sophomore Evan Silver and redshirt senior Ryan Mango to jump out to a 10-0 lead.

Silver registered his second fall of the season, pinning Garrison White in 1:54 at 125 pounds. Ranked 12th nationally, Silver moves to 20-4 overall and 10-2 in duals.

Mango, ranked 10th in the nation, secured two near fall points in the final period to secure the 10-2 major decision over Dominick Malone at 133 pounds. The St. Louis, Mo., native has now posted at least 25 wins in each of his four seasons with the Cardinal, improving to 25-3 and 19-1 in duals this year.

The Wildcats cut the lead to 10-8 with major decision wins at 141 and 149 pounds. Stanford redshirt freshman Peter Galli swung the momentum back to the Cardinal with a 7-3 decision over Ben Sullivan at 157 pounds. He is now 12-4 on the year.

Redshirt freshman Jim Wilson had an eight-match winning streak snapped, dropping an 11-7 decision to No. 7 Pierce Harger at 165 pounds. He is now 30-6 overall and 18-2 in duals.

Senior Kyle Meyer scored the final points of the afternoon for Stanford after Northwestern’s Lee Munster had to default due to injury. Meyer is having his best season with the Cardinal, moving to 24-10 overall and 15-4 in duals.

Sophomore Thomas Kimbrell and senior Dan Scherer both fell 5-3 in sudden victory decisions at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively.

Redshirt freshman heavyweight Josh Marchok concluded the dual with a 6-3 loss to top-ranked Mike McMullan. He stands at 16-11 on the year and 13-7 in duals.

Stanford now has two weeks to prepare for the Pac-12 Championships. The Cardinal will be hosting the tournament for the first time since 2006 on Sunday, March 2 at Maples Pavilion. Tickets are on-sale online at GoStanford.com.
