AUSTIN, Texas – Texas used five runs in the second inning to jump to an early lead and held on for a 9-3 win over Stanford Friday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The Cardinal ended its six-game winning streak over the Longhorns with the loss.

Brett Michael Doran and Tommy Edman led the offense with two hits apiece and Austin Slater drove in two.

Stanford started the scoring in the first thanks to opposite-field singles from Wayne Taylor and Danny Diekroeger. After Alex Blandino was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Slater grounded out to drive in Taylor and make it 1-0 Cardinal.

The lead was short lived, as Texas put up one run in the first and five more in the second inning off of Stanford starter Cal Quantrill.

All five of Texas’ runs in the second came after a dropped third strike kept the inning alive. The Cardinal’s freshman pitcher worked out of a jam to appear to get out of the frame but after catcher Brant Whiting blocked the third strike he could not locate the ball and Texas’ Brooks Marlow beat out a throw to first base. The next four batters went triple, single, walk, single to break out the game.

Quantrill (0-2), who took the loss, was lifted after two innings in favor of the bullpen, which shined through the middle innings. Daniel Starwalt set the tone with three innings of one-hit ball, as Stanford’s relievers finished with a line of six innings, seven hits and three run.

Chris Castellanos threw 1.2 innings before giving way to Griffin Weir, who allowed a run before getting an out in the seventh.

Stanford added two runs in the top of the eighth on a balk and an Austin Slater single after Diekroeger walked and Blandino doubled down the right field line.

David Schmidt allowed two runs in the bottom of the eight and Gabe Cramer came in to finish the frame with two strikeouts.

Mark Payton led Texas with four hits and three RBI, including a triple in the second.

Stanford and Texas meet again each of the next two days on the Longhorn Network. Saturday’s matchup begins at noon PT and Sunday’s finale starts at 11 a.m. PT.
