AUSTIN, Texas – The Stanford baseball team came from behind twice to tie game two of a three-game set at Texas before eventually dropping a 4-3 decision on a bases-loaded wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday. The Cardinal scored two runs in the seventh inning to make it 2-2 and another in the eighth to even the score at three before the Longhorns’ walk-off win.
Four Stanford players had two hits, including Zach Hoffpauir and Alex Blandino who each provided two-out RBI hits in the later innings. Hoffpauir’s came on a bases-loaded single in the seventh and Blandino provided a clutch double down the left field line in the eighth to score Austin Slater from first.
Brett Hanewich pushed Stanford’s run of starting freshmen on the mound to the first six games. He worked 5.1 innings while giving up four hits and two runs (one earned) in a no decision.
Hanewich kept Stanford in the game after allowing two runs in the first. He handed it over to Logan James, who worked out of a jam in the sixth by induced two ground balls with runners on second and third to keep the Longhorns’ lead at two.
Stanford finally got on the board in the seventh inning off of Texas starter Dillon Peters. Slater and Blandino singled to open the frame, before a failed sac bunt and a batted ball that hit a runner made it first and third with two outs. Wayne Taylor continued the inning with a walk and Hoffpauir’s line-drive single to left evened the score, 2-2.
Texas regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh with a single from Mark Patyon, who was 3-3 today after going 4-5 yesterday, but Blandino tied it up again with his liner that rolled all the way to the wall.
The score stayed at 3-3 until the bottom of the ninth when Texas loaded the bases off of Stanford reliever Marcus Brakeman. On a 1-2 count with C.J. Hinojosa at the plate, Brakeman threw a pitch through the left batter’s box and past the catcher Taylor to plate Collin Shaw and end the game.
Slater and Alex Dunlap also picked up two hits for Stanford and Tommy Edman doubled for the third time this season.
Stanford and Texas meet in the series finale tomorrow at noon PT. The game will be broadcast on the Longhorn Network and KZSU.
