STANFORD, Calif. -- Sophomore Steven Solomon (Sydney, Australia/Cranbrook School) of the Stanford men’s track and field team was selected as the Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of March 10-16.

Solomon broke away from the NCAA indoor championship field in the distance medley relay to enable Stanford to take command and win the national title in 9:37.63. Solomon, running the 400-meter leg, ran a blazing 45.75 to thrust Stanford from second, after a strong opening 1,200 from Marco Bertolotti, into huge lead. Luke Lefebure (800) and Michael Atchoo (1,600) protected the lead to allow the Cardinal to win the event for the fourth time in history.

Solomon’s time was more than one second faster than the next-fastest split in the field and was more than two seconds faster than all but three others.

This is Solomon’s first Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor and the first for the men’s track and field team in 2014. Solomon and the Cardinal men finished 12th as a team, and the Stanford women were seventh.

Also nominated: Alex Clay (Women’s Diving), Brian Cook (Men’s Volleyball), Aisling Cuffe (Women’s Track and Field), Kristian Ipsen (Men’s Diving), Chasson Randle (Men’s Basketball), Leah White (Softball).
