STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford evened its Pac-12 Conference baseball series against USC Saturday with a commanding 6-2 win over the visiting Trojans at Sunken Diamond. Out-hitting the visitors for the second straight game, Stanford’s offense produced enough breathing room for Cal Quantrill to pick up his first league victory after hurling 6.1 innings of one-run, six-hit ball.
Quantrill (3-2) was brilliant through six frames, holding strong until permitting a seventh-inning score after striking out five without dealing a free pass to the Trojans (11-10 overall, 2-3 Pac-12). A.J. Vanegas picked up where the freshman starter left off, carding his first save on the season behind 2.2 innings of one-hit relief.
Stanford (8-9, 1-1) responded from a Friday setback to set the stage for Sunday’s rubber match slated for 3 p.m. (PT). The contest will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks, and a victory would clinch a third straight series win over the Trojans.
Drew Jackson led the offensive attack with two hits and three runs in as many at-bats. Brett Michael Doran had a game-high three RBI.
Austin Slater chipped in a triple for the second straight game, now accounting for two of Stanford’s six on the season.
The Cardinal left 10 stranded as the USC defense, which committed three errors, held things together while four Trojans saw time on the rubber. Stanford rattled starter Bob Wheatley (2-2) for four runs – two earned – on three hits over the first three innings. Wheatley was his own worst enemy by walking five.
Blake Lacey had three of the Trojans’ seven hits.
Stanford left a duo stranded in the first, with USC putting runners on the corners in the second and aimed to make its move with one away. Danny Diekroeger laid out for a diving snag at first on a foul bunt and Quantrill caught a Trojan trying to steal home to keep the visitors off the board.
Doran drove in a pair with a second-inning single, and the Cardinal lead moved to 3-0 on the heels of Alex Dunlap’s sacrifice fly in the third.
USC waited until the seventh to produce its first run when Blake Lacey singled in a score. The tally snapped a streak of 36.1 innings without an earned run allowed from Cardinal starting pitchers, and closed the book on Quantrill’s streak of 17.1 scoreless frames on the bump.
Eighth-inning doubles from Jackson and Wayne Taylor yielded a pair of insurance runs to help seal the deal for the Cardinal.
