STANFORD, Calif. -- Stanford received two stellar starting pitching outings and a walk-off sac fly from Tommy Edman in game two to sweep a doubleheader against Oregon Friday night by 6-3 and 2-1 (11 innings) scores. Brett Hanewich tallied a win in game one, before Cal Quantrill worked seven innings and allowed one run in a no decision.
“It was a great job by our pitching,” said Mark Marquess, The Clarke and Elizabeth Nelson Director of Baseball. “It was Cal’s best outing, he was really dominant. I thought our pitching was really outstanding all day today.”
The Cardinal capped the long day at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond after 20 innings in the 2-1 victory. Zach Hoffpauir led off the 11th with a double, Drew Jackson bunted him over and Edman finished it.
Quantrill pitched the first seven and struck out eight while allowing six hits and one run. John Hochstatter (3-1) went the last four easily, as the Ducks had only two hits off the junior.
Edman scored the Cardinal’s first run via a sac fly, as well. Danny Diekroeger drove home the freshman in the third.
Stanford had three hits in the game, although the offense broke out for five runs in the first three innings of the first game.
Hanewich gave the Cardinal its first quality start of the day by going six innings and allowing three runs. He was aided by the outburst from the Stanford bats, as Oregon’s Tommy Thorpe was bounced after 3.2 innings in his shortest career starting effort.
The Cardinal scored three in the first and single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings to open a 6-1 lead. Stanford used two walks, two well-placed bunts and two more swinging singles to plate three in the first.
Alex Blandino led the offensive attack in the first game. He was one of four Cardinal to record multiple hits, one of which was a home run to left center.
Stanford and Oregon are schedule to play the third game of the series at 2 p.m. tomorrow. There is rain in the forecast, so fans should stay tuned to GoStanford.com and @StanfordBSB on Twitter for updates on potential schedule changes.
