SEATTLE – Stanford loaded the bases twice in the first five innings, but failed to push a run across in each chance as Washington took game one of a three-game set, 6-1. The Cardinal and Huskies square off tomorrow at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m. on Pac-12 Networks.
Washington (22-6-1, 11-2 Pac-12), which is ranked No. 9 by Baseball America, countered by scoring five runs, all with two outs, off of starter Brett Hanewich. The Huskies scored four in the second frame on four hits and a hit batter to pull ahead.
Hanewich (1-3) took the loss after working 5.1 innings and allowing the five runs on eight hits.
Stanford’s only run came on a solo blast over the 365 sign in left field by Alex Blandino in the seventh inning. The junior third baseman has homered in back-to-back games for the second time in his career.
The Cardinal (11-15, 3-7 Pac-12) was limited to four hits over the first six innings by UW’s Jared Fisher (3-3). Danny Diekroeger, Austin Slater, Alex Dunlap and Wayne Taylor all singled off the junior, who stranded seven base runners.
Fisher spoiled Slater and Dunlap’s hits to lead off the second inning by getting Drew Jackson to ground out with the bases loaded. Two strikeouts ended the fifth-inning opportunity.
Will Ballowe and Tyler Dunlap pitched the last three innings for Washington. Ballowe’s only blemish over two innings was the Blandino homer and Dunlap worked a 1-2-3 ninth.
Logan James, Daniel Starwalt and Griffin Weir threw out of Stanford’s bullpen. James got two outs in the sixth on a diving catch-and-tag double play by Blandino, Starwalt allowed a run in the seventh and Weir held UW scoreless in the eighth.
Robert Pahl, Brian Wolfe and Erik Forgione combined for six hits, while Pahl drove in two for the Huskies. Washington was held without an extra-base hit.
Cal Quantrill (3-2, 2.60) will take on Washington’s Tyler Davis (6-1, 1.16) tomorrow at 6 p.m. in game two.
