SEATTLE – Stanford fell behind 4-0 against Washington Saturday evening on its way to a 7-2 loss in front of 1,585 fans at Husky Ballpark. The Huskies clinched the series before tomorrow’s 4 p.m. finale on Pac-12 Networks.
Three Cardinal players had two hits, including Alex Blandino, Brett Michael Doran and Zach Hoffpauir, as Stanford totaled 10 for the game. The offense was hampered by 11 base runners stranded, while Tyler Davis (7-1) won for the seventh time this season.
Stanford (11-16, 3-8 Pac-12) did rally back for runs in the third and fourth to cut the lead in half, but flashy defensive play by Washington limited the Cardinal’s production. Center fielder Braden Bishop turned an Alex Blandino home run into a sac fly by leaping above the wall in the third and second baseman Andrew Ely came up with a diving play to rob Drew Jackson with the bases loaded and save at least one run in the fourth.
Hoffpauir had Stanford’s other RBI on a single a single to right field before Jackson’s groundout. The sophomore outfielder has been on a tear of late, as he has multiple hits in six of the last nine games.
Washington (24-6-1, 12-2 Pac-12) built its lead on a series of softly-hit singles. Starting pitcher Cal Quantrill (3-3) kept UW off balance, but the Huskies made contact and found holes for seven hits in the first two innings.
Brian Wolfe pushed the Huskies’ lead to four on a line-drive double to right center, before being thrown out trying to stretch the hit to a triple.
UW, which came in ranked No. 9 by Baseball America, also ran themselves out of the fifth. After one runner scored on a wild pitch, another tried to come home from second, but was thrown out easily at the plate.
Quantrill fought out of two bases-loaded jams to keep the Cardinal within striking distance. The freshman, who entered the contest fifth in ERA in Pac-12 games, finished with 5.2 innings pitched, 11 hits, five runs, three walks and four strikeouts. He gave way to Chris Castellanos to get the final out of the sixth.
Sam Lindquist finished the game on the hill for Stanford. He allowed Washington’s final two runs on a double to left.
Davis went 5.2 innings for Washington, while allowing two runs on seven hits. He struck out two and walked two.
Trevor Dunlap came in after Davis and Troy Rallings pitched the ninth.
The two teams meet again tomorrow, as Stanford looks to avoid the sweep. Washington has already clinched the series win, its first over Stanford since 2010.
