Taking Both Oceans by Storm

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford sailing raced to two first-place finishes this weekend at the Thompson Trophy and South 5 regattas.

The Cardinal put on a dominating performance at the Thompson Trophy in New London, Conn., earning top-two finishes in divisions A, B and C to win the regatta. Competing against 18 teams, Stanford posted 173 points to finish 57 points ahead of second-place Saint Mary’s College of Maryland (230).

Kieran Chung and Haley Kirk sailed to a second-place result in division-A with 67 points. The duo recorded 10 top-10 finishes in 11 races, including six in the top-five and one victory.

Antoine Screve and Helena Scutt earned top marks in division-B with 51 points, earning three victories and eight top-five finishes.

Hans Henken, Axel Sly, Mary Vangelos and John Cannistraro competed in division-C and placed first. The quartet recorded eight top-five placements and two victories to finish with 55 points.

Stanford had an exceptionally strong showing at the South 5 regatta in Los Angeles, winning divisions A and B to place first among 28 teams. Scott Buckstaff and Katie Walker cruised to a first-place result in division-A with five wins in 10 races, finishing with 36 points.

Holly Tullo and Noelle Herring sailed to a first-place finish in division-B with 24 points. The pair earned top-10 placements in all 10 races and recorded three victories.

The Cardinal travels next weekend to the Admirals Cup in Kings Point, N.Y., and the Boston Dinghy Challenge Cup in Cambridge, Mass.
