STOCKTON, Calif. -- Tommy Edman provided a two-RBI single and three Stanford pitchers combined to limit Pacific to six hits to lead the Cardinal to a 3-2 win Tuesday night at Klein Family Field.
Edman’s single gave the Cardinal a 3-0 lead in the sixth after Logan James (1-2) shut down Pacific in the early going. Edman, who had moved his career-best hitting streak to nine games earlier, slapped a base hit through the right side with two outs and the bases loaded.
Three runs proved to be enough as neither team was exceptional with the bats. The two squads combined for 13 hits and 16 runners left on base.
James, who made his first start of 2014, was untouchable through four innings of work. He kept Pacific scoreless by allowing just one infield single, walking none and striking out five before being pulled because of a predetermined pitch limit. The sophomore provided a boost for the Cardinal by commanding the zone, something he had struggled with over his last few outings.
Alex Blandino gave Stanford a 1-0 advantage in the first inning. The junior third baseman smacked a double down the left field line, his team-leading ninth of the season, to score Brett Michael Doran.
James kept it that way before giving way to Chris Viall in the fifth.
Viall went 2.1 innings and gave up one run on two hits. He exited after taking a line drive to the arm, as Chris Castellanos took over with runners on first and second. A base hit charged a run to Viall, before Castellanos got out of the inning with two easy ground balls.
Pacific refused to go down quiet, hitting back-to-back doubles with two outs in the final frame. The two-baggers brought the tying run to the plate, but a line drive straight to the glove of Blandino at third ended it.
Castellanos went 2.2 innings to pick up his first career save. He allowed one run on three hits, did not walked a batter and struck out one.
John Haberman (3-2) took the loss in five innings for Pacific.
Stanford is back on the road this weekend with a trip to defending national champion UCLA. The Bruins and Cardinal meet for three games starting Friday, including a Saturday 7 p.m. date on ESPNU.
