CORVALLIS, Ore. – Stanford dropped its third straight game to Oregon State despite outhitting the Beavers Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium. The Cardinal gathered 10 hits but stranded eight base runners in a 2-1 loss.
“I thought we pitched well,” said Clarke and Elizabeth Nelson Director of Baseball Mark Marquess. “In most cases you pitched well enough to win but we didn’t get them any runs.”
Stanford (10-14, 3-6 Pac-12) received outstanding pitching for the third consecutive day, as Chris Viall and John Hochstatter limited Oregon State to six hits. Viall (1-3) took the loss after 1.1 innings, before Hochstatter shut down the Beavers over the next 6.2 frames.
Hochstatter came in to work out of a jam in the second and got through another tough situation in the third. He settled in to complete the game, while allowing three hits, striking out four and walking three. Alex Blandino helped the effort with a nifty over-the-shoulder grab in foul territory to leave the bases loaded in the second inning.
Oregon State (25-6, 9-3 Pac-12) scored both of its runs on a two-out bloop single by Kavin Keyes in the first.
After getting shut out yesterday and struggling through the first two innings today, the Cardinal’s bats broke out for six hits during the third and fourth innings.
Stanford cut Oregon State’s lead in half in the third on three straight two-out singles. Wayne Taylor started the rally, Blandino kept it going and Brett Michael Doran sent a liner to right center to cut the Beavers’ lead in half.
Blandino, who was leading off for the first time in his career, and Doran exit the series tied for the team lead with .321 batting averages.
The Cardinal had another prime opportunity to score in the fourth when Alex Dunlap and Austin Slater started the inning with back-to-back singles. Slater tried to go from first to third on Dunlap’s hit down the left field line, but he was gunned down on a call that was questioned by the Cardinal.
The next batter, Zach Hoffpauir, singled in what turned out to be Stanford’s best chance to tie the game.
Stanford was kept off balance by Oregon State starter Jace Fry (6-1), who went seven innings for the win. Zack Reser and Scott Schultz finished the day for the Beavers. Schultz earned his second save of the 2014 campaign.
Hoffpauir, Slater and Doran each had two hits for the Cardinal. Only Keyes had a pair of knocks for Oregon State.
Stanford is back at home Tuesday for a tilt against UC Davis. The Cardinal goes back to Pac-12 play during a visit to Washington next weekend.
