TUCSON, Ariz. -- Stanford lined the ball around Hi Corbett Field for a season-high 20 hits on its way to a 10-6 win against Arizona Saturday night. The Cardinal tied the series 1-1 ahead of tomorrow’s 12 p.m. finale.
Austin Slater led the lineup with three hits and three RBI, his team-best 18th multi-hit and 10th multi-RBI performances of the year. Danny Diekroeger, Alex Blandino and Zach Hoffpauir also had three hits apiece to give Stanford its most hits since a 23-hit, 19-6 win against California April 9, 2012.
Every Stanford player in the starting lineup had at least one hit and six had two or more. Wayne Taylor and Brett Michael Doran each picked up two in the eighth and ninth spots in the order, respectively. Taylor also contributed an RBI triple.
Stanford (23-21, 10-13 Pac-12) went 20-41 in the game (.488), including 11-25 (.440) with runners on and 5-11 (.455) with two outs.
Starting pitcher John Hochstatter was the beneficiary of the outburst, although he needed little support early. The junior lefty allowed only four hits through the first eight innings, while the Cardinal was cruising to a 10-3 lead.
Hochstatter won for the fifth straight time behind 8.2 innings pitched and four earned runs on eight hits. He allowed six total runs, two being unearned, as he pushed his consecutive innings without an earned run streak to 21.1 before Arizona scored off of him in the fourth.
Arizona (19-29, 8-18 Pac-12) and the Cardinal looked to be locked in a tight battle with the Wildcats leading 3-2 after four innings, but Stanford poured on seven runs in the next two frames.
The Cardinal scored three in the fifth, as Diekroeger, Blandino and Slater put together three straight hits with one out. Slater’s was a two-RBI double, before Dominic Jose topped off the inning with a two-out RBI single.
Four more runs crossed the plate in the sixth thanks to 5-for-6 hitting. The outs came on a sac bunt and an inning-ending double play, which also drove in a run. Doran started the scoring with an RBI double and later scored on a wild pitch. Slater had another RBI on a rolling single through the right side.
Stanford’s first seven runs were charged to Cody Hamlin, who took the loss. Hamlin (5-4) faced 24 batters and allowed 14 hits, while striking out three. The Cardinal did not strike out against any of four Arizona relievers to mark Stanford’s eighth game with three or fewer punch outs.
Tyler Thorne came on to get the final out of the game for Stanford.
Logan James (1-2, 5.14) is set to face Tyger Talley (1-2, 3.75) in tomorrow’s rubber match.
