STANFORD, Calif. -- Stanford held a 4-0 lead after four innings, but could not hold on as San Jose State stormed back for a 10-8 win Tuesday night at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond. The Cardinal ended its perfect mark (9-0) in non-conference midweek games and snapped a three-game winning streak over the Spartans.

San Jose State (18-36) benefited from seven walks, while also picking up 12 hits. The Cardinal out-hit SJSU, 14-12, but the Spartans scored four runs in the fourth inning and five more in the sixth to run away with the game.

Stanford (24-22) had three players with three hits, Austin Slater, Zach Hoffpauir and Brant Whiting, and two others had two hits. The trio of three-hit performances came out of the fourth, fifth and sixth spots in the order, as each player continued their recent hot hitting. Slater, Hoffpauir and Whiting are all batting over .400 in the last nine games.

Eight of nine Spartans in the starting lineup reached base at least two times, led by Jacob Valdez with two hits and three RBI.

The Cardinal plated its first four runs in a hurry thanks to a two-run homer by Alex Blandino and a pair of RBI singles off the bat of Whiting before the third inning ended. Blandino’s blast to left field was his Pac-12-leading ninth of the season. Nine home runs is more than five Pac-12 teams have accumulated all season.

Stanford continued to hit throughout the game, scoring in six of nine innings, but put just single tallies on the scoreboard in five frames. SJSU did its scoring in bunches, plating four in the fourth and five more in the sixth.

The Spartans tied the game, 4-4, in the fourth off of three Cardinal pitchers, including starter Chris Viall. An error and two walks helped the Spartans, as Tyler Thorne and Chris Castellanos also threw in the inning. Stanford was quick to answer in the bottom half on a Danny Diekroeger RBI single, but the five-run sixth proved insurmountable.

Castellanos (0-1) stayed in the game until the devastating sixth inning, when a hit-by-pitch and a two singles preceded a fly out to start the frame. Sam Lindquist came on and after a double, walk, single, hit-by-pitch and a wild pitch SJSU took a 9-6 lead.

The Cardinal tried its hand at rallies in the seventh and ninth, before each fizzled after scoring one.

Marcus Brakeman finished the game on the hill for the Cardinal. He threw 3.1 innings as Stanford’s most effective pitcher, giving up one run on two hits and striking out three.

Michael Wright (2-4) earned the win by going 2.0 innings, while allowing one run on two hits and pitching during SJSU’s scoring spree. Myles Richard survived two hits in the ninth to get his fifth save of the season.

San Jose State played its final game of the season, finishing with an 18-36 record. The win over Stanford was the Spartans first since 2012.

Stanford continues its five-game home stand by hosting Washington State Friday-Sunday at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond. Friday is the annual Fireworks Night, former Associate Head Coach Dean Stotz will be honored during a pregame ceremony on Saturday and Sunday is slated as Senior Day.
