STANFORD, Calif. -- Zach Hoffpauir had five hits and Cal Quantrill struck out 10 for the second straight game, as Stanford shutout Utah, 5-0, to open a three-game series at Smith’s Ballpark Friday afternoon. The Cardinal has won 17 of its last 24 games to move back to .500 in Pac-12 play.
Quantrill (5-5) looked sharp again, going 8.0 innings for the fourth time this season and second time in as many starts. He limited the Utes to four hits and held them hitless during four at-bats with runners in scoring position. The freshman retired 12 straight batters from the third through seventh innings to stay out of trouble, while the Cardinal built a 3-0 lead.
Utah (16-34, 4-24 Pac-12) finally got something going off of Quantrill in the seventh, as two walks and a single loaded the bases with two outs. Quantrill, a righty from Port Hope, Ontario, shut down the threat with his ninth, and biggest, strikeout on a 0-2 off-speed pitch in the dirt to preserve the Cardinal lead.
Quantrill finishes his freshman regular season with a 2.92 earned-run average, including a 2.49 ERA in Pac-12 games. A Friday starter for much of his first year on The Farm, Quantrill added to his Pac-12 Freshman of the Year candidacy, as conference opponents batted only .218 off of him and struck out 65 times in 68.2 innings.
Stanford (28-23, 14-14 Pac-12) led 3-0 on single tallies in the first, sixth and seventh innings. Hoffpauir drilled a single to right with two outs in the first to get the Cardinal on the board, Danny Diekroeger smacked an RBI double on a 3-0 pitch in the sixth and Brant Whiting lifted a sac fly in the seventh.
Hoffpauir’s first-inning RBI was his 17th with two outs this season. It started his day in which he became the third Pac-12 player to record five hits in a game this season. The sophomore outfielder, who is one of 10 college baseball players that also plays FBS football, is the first Stanford player to get five hits since Brian Ragira went 5-6 against California April 9, 2012.
The Cardinal scored its first two runs on 10 hits off of Utah starter Mitch Watrous (3-7). Josh Chapman relieved Watrous and Stanford scored three more, including two runs on a bases-loaded single in the ninth inning by pinch hitter Jack Klein. Dylan Drachler finished the day on the mound by sitting down two of three batters out.
Utah loaded the bases again in the ninth inning when Chris Castellanos walked one and allowed a hit, before A.J. Vanegas walked another Ute with no outs. Vanegas then induced a force out at home on a fielder’s choice and a game-ending 4-6-3 double play in the non-save situation.
Shortstop Tommy Edman made a nice play on the final outs of the game by catching a low feed from second baseman Brett Michael Doran. The grab kept Stanford errorless and its hopes of setting the program’s single-season fielding percentage record in order. The defense is in a virtual tie for the record with a .977 clip, the 12th-best mark in the nation. The 2005 team holds the top spot at .977.
Austin Slater extended his career-long hitting streak to 15 games. Alex Blandino reached base for the 21st consecutive game, also a career-best run.
Doran picked up his 22nd sac bunt of the season to tie for the national lead in the sixth inning.
