Bright Lights, Big Bats

LOS ANGELES – Seven Stanford players combined for 12 hits and Madi Schreyer pitched her 22nd complete game on the season Friday to lift the Cardinal to a 12-9 victory at No. 2/2 UCLA.

Stanford (29-21, 4-15 Pac-12) set the tone early, scoring nine runs in the first three innings. Kayla Bonstrom had a great night at the plate, going 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs. Leah White, Erin Ashby and Tylyn Wells also had strong games offensively, recording two hits apiece.

Schreyer (21-12) had a strong outing in the circle, holding UCLA (44-5, 15-4 Pac-12) to four runs through the first six innings. She finished the game with four strikeouts, allowing nine runs on 11 hits and nine walks.

Stanford is the first team not ranked in the top-five in the country to beat the Bruins and just the second to defeat UCLA at home.

The Cardinal did not waste any time getting going on offense, putting three runs on the board in the first inning. White led off with a double over the center fielder’s head and was brought home when Bonstrom singled in the next at bat. Eight batters saw pitches in the inning and the Cardinal took an early 3-0 lead.

UCLA responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning and was threatening for more, but a great defensive play by Cassandra Roulund helped halt any possible Bruin rally. With the bases loaded, UCLA’s Mysha Sataraka hit a fly ball to Roulund who made the catch and threw out a Bruins runner trying to tag up and score from third.

Roulund had a great game, going 1-for-3 with three RBI and two runs, and made multiple highlight plays in the outfield.

Stanford did a majority of its damage in the second inning. Five of the first six Cardinal batters recorded singles and Stanford rallied for five runs to extend its lead to 8-1.

UCLA responded with two runs in the bottom of the second to cut Stanford’s advantage to 8-3. The Bruins were limited to one run over the next four innings.

Stanford took a 10-4 lead in the sixth when an RBI-single by Hanna Winter brought in Ashby. The Cardinal added two more runs in the seventh. Bonstrom delivered an RBI-triple and was followed by Kylie Sorenson who singled to bring in Stanford’s 12th run.

UCLA rallied for five runs in the seventh to cut Stanford’s lead to 12-9 and had the bases loaded with two outs. However, Schreyer was able to get Jessica Hall to ground out to end the game and secure the victory.

Stanford will look to continue its momentum Saturday at 3 p.m. (PT) in a game televised on ESPNU.
