COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Stanford sailing earned its first podium finish since 1996 with a third-place result Monday at the APS Team Race Championship.
The Cardinal registered a 17-8 record over the three-day competition and went 3-2 on the final day of racing to edge out fourth-place Boston College (15-10). Yale claimed the top spot with a 22-3 mark, followed by St. Mary’s College of Maryland at 18-7.
Kevin Laube, Antoine Screve, Mateo Vargas, Hans Henken, Kieran Chung and Oliver Toole sailed as skippers for the team. Stanford was represented by crews Yuri Namikawa, Helena Scutt, Tally Buckstaff, Mary Vangelos, Haley Kirk and Carolyn Ortel.
The Cardinal dropped its first race on the day against Boston College but rebounded quickly with a victory over Navy to earn a spot in the third round.
Stanford dropped its first and third races of Round Three against Yale and St. Mary’s College of Maryland, respectively. However, the Cardinal defeated Boston College in the second race to earn a third-place result.
Stanford will turn its attention to the Gill Coed Championship for the next four days, as racing continues in College Park, Md.
