Stanford Blitzes Bulldogs

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – No. 9 Stanford registered a season-high 31 shots and nine penalty corners to earn a dominating 3-0 victory Sunday at Yale.

The Cardinal (10-1, 1-0 NorPac) controlled every aspect of the game from start to finish, holding advantages over the Bulldogs (1-7, 0-2 Ivy League) in shots (31-8) and penalty corners (9-2). It was the most shots Stanford registered in a game since Nov. 1, 2012, when it took 31 against Radford in the first round of the NorPac Tournament.

Jessica Chisholm, Lauren Becker and Elise Ogle scored a goal apiece, while Shannon Herold, Kelsey Harbin, Fran Tew and Ogle contributed assists. Alex McCawley led Stanford with six shots, followed by Tew (5), Harbin (4) and Maddie Secco (4).

Stanford recorded its sixth shutout on the year behind another strong defensive effort. Dulcie Davies made three saves and Maddy Belin, who made her collegiate debut in goal during the second half, registered one stop.

Stanford got off to a hot start when Chisholm, a science, technology and society major, converted a penalty corner in the second minute. Ogle, a communication major, inserted the ball to Herold, a human biology major, who set up the shot for Chisholm. The junior took advantage of the opportunity and scored her second goal on the year.

The Cardinal extended its lead to 2-0 in the 11th minute when Harbin, a human biology major, fed a pass to Becker, a communication major, who knocked it into the goal. It was Becker’s fifth goal of the year and Harbin’s third assist.

Stanford held a 2-0 lead at halftime and was in complete control with a 14-4 advantage in shots and a 4-1 penalty corner edge.

Ogle extended Stanford’s lead to 3-0 in the 39th minute on a pass from Fran Tew. Ogle became the ninth Stanford player to register at least one goal this season.

Stanford continued to pressure the Bulldogs, accumulating 17 shots and five penalty corners in the second half but Yale goalkeeper Heather Schlesier did well to keep her team in the game. Schlesier made 15 saves on the day.

Stanford returns home Friday to take on Pacific at 6 p.m. (PT) before hitting the road for five straight games.
