Third is the word

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford picked up its second third-place finish in two weeks thanks to a top-notch performance from its B-Division boat this weekend at the St. Mary's Fall Inter-Conference Regatta in St. Mary's City, Md.

Junior Axel Sly and sophomore Holly Tullo sailed the Cardinal A boat to an eighth-place finish in the division with 105 points. After averaging an 11th-place finish through five races, Sly and Tullo finished with five top-six results over the final seven races to move up the leaderboard and put Stanford in a good position in the overall team race for the B boat to make a charge.

And for the second consecutive week, the Cardinal got all it could ask for from its B boat, as the freshman pair of Will La Dow and Kennedy Placek finished second in the B Division with 60 points behind MIT, which won both divisions for the overall team title. La Dow and Placek started the regatta at a lightning-pace with a top-three finish in each of its first five races including two race wins and held on for the impressive result.

For La Dow, the strong effort was especially welcome this weekend, as his older brother, Jacob La Dow, competes for the St. Mary's men's sailing team. The San Diego native was a two-year team captain at Point Loma high school and used that experience to remain poised in his first collegiate event.

Next weekend, Stanford will be in action again at the PCCSC Match Race Championship in San Diego and competing for the Danmark Trophy in New London, Conn. Live results are available at scores.collegesailing.org.
