Three For Three

With its squad spread out between three separate competitions on the same weekend for the first time this season, the Cardinal answered the call in resounding fashion, picking up a top-five team finish at all three events.

Stanford placed fifth in both of its events on the East Coast -- the Yale Women's Intersectional and the Navy Fall -- and third at the Stoney Burke hosted by Cal in San Francisco Bay.

Holly Tullo and Noelle Herring led Stanford's A-division boat to seventh place in the division at the Yale Women's Intersectional. The all-freshman duo of Elena VandenBerg and Grace Lucas, both making their Stanford debuts, impressed by leading the B-division boat to a third-place finish and put the Cardinal in the top five as a team.

At Navy, co-captains Kieran Chung and Haley Kirk teamed up to navigate Stanford's A-division boat to a sixth-place finish, winning three individual races and each of the first two along the way. In B-division, Reinier Eenkema van Dijk teamed up with Sammy Steele for seven races and J.P. Cannistraro for the final eight races to claim eighth place in the division. Sally Mace made her season debut to finish 12th in D-division.

The star of the show at Navy, however, was freshman Luke Muller. Muller, a member of the U.S. Sailing Development Team, started his Cardinal career off with a bang by winning the C-division. Muller earned 13 top-five finishes in the 15 race event to claim the division crown.

And at the Stoney Burke in San Francisco Bay, Stanford was forced to navigate tricky conditions, as light winds allowed only six races to be completed over the two-day event. Scott Buckstaff and Amelia Hardy placed sixth in A-division, and Max Kohrman and Nikki Obel placed fourth in B-division.

Next weekend, Stanford will host PCCSC championships for both the men’s and women’s divisions. The Cardinal will also send members of the team to compete for the Hoyt Trophy in Providence, R.I., and Stanford will sail at the Stu Nelson in New London, Conn.
