Two Qualify for Nationals

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - With its squad split between five different events on both U.S. coasts, Stanford displayed the strength of its roster from its oldest to youngest sailors en route to three victories, three more top-three finishes and another ninth-place result.

The most important events of the weekend were the PCCSC Men's and Women's Singlehanded Championships, hosted by Stanford, as both championships offered spots in the National Singlehanded Championships to their top-two finishers. Fifth-year senior Sally Mace, senior co-captain Kieran Chung and standout freshman Luke Muller all punched their tickets to nationals, while freshman Haley Fox finished a close third to just miss out on a perfect sweep for the Cardinal.

Mace, after opening with a second- and fourth-place finish in the first two races, won each of the last seven races to dominate the women's championship. On the men's side, Muller won 10 of 15 races to coast to his title, while Chung picked up four wins and 14 top-five finishes to stay well ahead of the field and earn the second spot at nationals.

Stanford also hosted the Women's Pacific Coast Championship over the weekend, and the Cardinal claimed the title behind strong performances from younger sailors. The A-division duo of Maeve White and Grace Lucas and the B-division boat of Elena VandenBerg and Haley Fox each won their divisions in dominant fashion by winning 10 of 14 races during the event.

On the East Coast, Stanford sent sailors to compete for the Stu Nelson in New London, Conn., and the Hoyt Trophy in Providence, R.I.

At the Stu Nelson, Stanford finished second overall. Lily Katz and Kennedy Placek finished fourth in A-division and Julia Lambert and Yuki Yoshiyasu earned a top-10 finish in seven of nine races to finish first in B-division.

In Providence, Hans Henken and Quinn Vangelos led the A-division boat to 12th place, while Axel Sly, Cally Tullo and Daniel Ron finished in third-place in B-division to move the Cardinal to ninth-place overall. Sly and Ron teamed up to win two of the last three races – finishing second in the third – to move up in the standings late.

Next weekend, Stanford will compete at the Freshman Interconference in Medford, Mass., and sail for the Victorian Coffee Urn at Dartmouth. Live results will be available at scores.collegesailing.org.
