Ubogagu for Two

TEMPE, Ariz. – Stanford senior Chioma Ubogagu scored both goals, 17 minutes apart, to give Stanford a 2-0 victory over No. 25 Arizona State in Pac-12 women’s soccer play Sunday.

No. 4 Stanford (14-1-2 overall, 6-1-1 Pac-12) earned its 13th shutout and sophomore goalkeeper Jane Campbell picked up her 17th career shutout, moving her alone into No. 7 on Stanford’s all-time list.

Ubogagu had her first multi-goal performance since twice doing so as a freshman. Her first goal came in the 23rd minute when  Andi Sullivan’s corner kick was headed away, only for Ubogagu to send a left-footed half-volley through traffic and inside the right post from just outside the box.

Ubogagu struck again in the 50th minute when Megan Turner supplied her with a pass in the right side of the penalty area. Ubogagu dribbled forward and sent a left-footed shot into the next from 12 yards.

"It was great to see Chi get those goals," Stanford coach Paul Ratcliffe said. "We trained a lot this week with finishing and Chi did extraordinarily well in the game."

The goals were the fifth and sixth of the season for Ubogagu, who moved into first on the team points list, with 18. This was her first road multi-goal match.

Ubogagu's performance came two days after Taylor Uhl scored two, including the winner, in a 3-2 overtime victory at Arizona. It was Uhl's first multi-goal match of the season.

"It's crucial to get players like Chi, Taylor, and everyone firing on all cylinders at this time of year," Ratcliffe said.

Stanford dominated possession, but the Sun Devils (9-4-4, 2-3-3) had a couple of good opportunities. A close-range header by Aly Moon was saved by Campbell, who lunged to her left. In the second half, Andi Sullivan got a piece of the ball as Moon flipped to herself inside the penalty area, saving what could have been a dangerous shot.

Stanford's Mariah Lee was stifled in the final minutes by goalkeeper Chandler Morris on a one-on-one breakaway.

The finish was in contrast to Friday's in Arizona, when the Wildcats scored twice after the 70th minute to rally from a 2-0 deficit and force overtime.

"That's something we talked about," Ratcliffe said. "We wanted to keep our foot on the pedal the entire game."

The Cardinal completed a two-match weekend sweep of the Arizona schools in what is the team's final two-match weekend road swing of the regular season.

Stanford plays host to Oregon on Thursday at 6 p.m. and Oregon State on Sunday at 3 to close the home portion of the regular season.

"We're in a good position," Ratcliffe said. "We've just got to keep working hard and finish strong."
