LOS ANGELES – The No. 1 Stanford women’s volleyball team improved to 25-0 with a 25-21, 25-23, 25-16 win at No. 21 USC, Wednesday, at the Galen Center in Los Angeles. The Cardinal, which is off to its best start since 1991, moves to 15-0 in the Pac-12, while the Trojans drop to 14-11 and 7-8 in the conference. It marked Stanford’s first win at USC since 2010
Stanford was led by its middle blockers redshirt freshman Merete Lutz and junior Inky Ajanaku in the win. Lutz tallied 13 kills on 18 swings with just one error to hit .667. She also registered two solo blocks. Ajanaku also had 13 kills, hitting .364.
Junior setter Madi Bugg directed the offense with 37 assists to go with 14 digs for her 13th double-double of the year. Senior opposite Morgan Boukather finished with nine kills, 11 digs and a solo block.
Senior libero Kyle Gilbert finished with 21 digs to lead the Cardinal defense. Junior Jordan Burgess totaled 14 digs and six kills, while junior Brittany Hwoard had eight digs and five kills.
As a team, Stanford hit .254 and held USC to a .146 clip. Both teams recorded four aces, while the Trojans led the blocks column, 6.0 to 4.0.
USC was led by outside hitter Samantha Bricio’s 12 kills and nine digs, but the junior was held to a .167 attack percentage. Sophomore Ebony Nwanebu added 11 kills, 10 digs and three blocks, while Elise Ruddins totaled 10 kills.
Stanford wraps up its road trip on Thursday, Nov. 13 at No. 18 UCLA. First serve between the Cardinal and Bruins is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Wooden Center in Los Angeles.
