Stanford Downs Utah Valley

OREM, Utah – The 25th-ranked Stanford wrestling team won eight of 10 bouts to defeat Utah Valley, 28-6, Saturday, in Orem, Utah. The Cardinal moves to 9-2 overall, while the Wolverines fell to 2-6.

Stanford won the first three matches to jump out to a 9-0 lead in the team score. A fall by fifth-year senior Garrett Schaner at 149 pounds and a major decision by redshirt sophomore Maxwell Hvolbek at 157 pounds put the dual out of reach for the Cardinal.

Schaner’s fall came in 1:20 over Trevor Wilson, marking the fastest of the season for the Big Rapids, Michigan native. He moves to 16-12 overall and to 6-4 in duals.

Hvolbek dominated Logan Addis, 16-6, to register his fourth major decision victory of the year. He is now 18-11 overall and 4-4 in duals.

Redshirt sophomore Zach Nevills, who has shared time in the line-up with Ryan Davies at 184 pounds, got things started for Stanford with a 5-4 overtime win over Ross Taylor. Redshirt freshman Garet Krohn then secured a 3-1 decision over Derek Thomas at 197 pounds. Tied 1-1 in the third period, Krohn registered a takedown with 36 seconds left and held on for the win.

Redshirt freshman Nathan Butler tallied a 6-2 decision over Utah Valley senior Adam Fager, who is a two-time NCAA qualifier. Butler scored his first takedown in the opening period and then pushed his lead to 5-0 with an escape and another takedown in the second. Fager finally got on the board with a takedown in the third, but Butler had riding time locked up for the win. He leads the team with 26 wins on the year and is 9-1 in duals.

After 15th-ranked Evan Silver was upset by Chasen Tolbert, 3-0, at 125 pounds, redshirt freshman Connor Schram held off Jade Rauser at 133 pounds. With the score tied 2-2 heading into the third period, Schram tallied an escape and a take down to take a 5-2 lead. Rauser cut the lead to 5-3 with an escape and was then awarded a stalling point to have a chance to win it, but Schram was able to hold on. He is now 10-1 on the year.

True freshman Mason Pengilly, who entered the year as a 125-pounder, filled in for Isaiah Locsin at 141 pounds. Pengilly wrestled tough against Matthew Ontiveros through the first two periods, but yielded a takedown in the third and fell 4-0.

Redshirt sophomore Jim Wilson, ranked No. 13 in the nation, improved to 25-4 on the year with a 9-4 decision over Dalton Harmon. Wilson now has 60 career victories in less than two full years of competition for the Cardinal.

Redshirt freshman Keaton Subjeck concluded the scoring for Stanford with a 3-1 decision over senior Ethan Smith at 174 pounds. A takedown in the first period which caught Smith off guard proved to be the difference-maker.

Stanford wraps-up the road trip on Sunday, Feb. 1 at Boise State. The Cardinal and Broncos will square off at 12 p.m. PT in Boise, Idaho.
