HOUSTON -- Freshman Mikey Diekroeger drove in three runs with three hits and classmate Matt Winaker also picked up three hits to give Stanford a series-opening 5-3 win at No. 10 Rice Friday night. The Cardinal never trailed after scoring four runs in the first inning.

Stanford’s (5-4) first frame tied its best inning of the season (fifth inning at Fullerton), although just one run was earned. Alex Dunlap and Diekroeger sparked the frame with doubles, as Dunlap drove in the Cardinal’s first run and Diekroeger sent two runners to the plate with his gap shot to left center. Matt Winaker also singled and Jonny Locher drove in a run with a ground out.

Rice (6-4) rallied to get within two by the end of the third inning, but sophomore Cal Quantrill (2-0) was too much for the Owls. The management science and engineering major went 7.0 innings, striking out seven and allowing three runs, to earn his second win of the season.

John Clay Reeves’ two-run double in the third inning moved Rice to the closest it would get all evening. Quantrill allowed just two hits from the fourth through seventh innings and retired the final eight batters he faced.

Colton Hock saved his second game of the season by pitching scoreless eighth and ninth innings.

Cardinal freshmen accounted for 10 of the team’s 13 hits. Quinn Brodey had two, while Beau Branton and Bryce Carter each singled once to go along with Diekroeger's and Winaker’s three hits apiece.

Diekroeger plated Stanford’s fifth run with a bases-loaded bouncer in the third inning with the infield drawn in. Rice second baseman Ford Stainback gloved the ball, but it was too late to get the runner headed home or Diekroeger at first.

Stanford and Rice meet at Reckling Park tomorrow for a doubleheader starting at noon. Marc Brakeman will get the ball in the first game for the Cardinal.
