LAKEWOOD, Calif. – Stanford split a pair of decisions to open the Long Beach State/Cal State Fullerton Louisville Slugger Classic on Friday, defeating Utah Valley 6-0 and falling to Wichita State 6-4.

The Cardinal (10-9) saw strong performances in the circle from pitchers Madi Schreyer and Haley Snyder who combined to allow just one earned run over the two games.

Stanford had a strong day offensively, hitting .333 as a team (19-for-57) with 10 RBIs and a .404 slugging percentage. Hanna Winter paced the Cardinal going 3-for-5 (.600) with one walk and two runs. Erin Ashby also had a nice showing at the plate, batting 4-for-7 (.571) with a double and two RBIs.

The Cardinal had an up-and-down day defensively, playing well against Utah Valley (5-9) but permitting three costly errors against Wichita State (9-8) that contributed to five unearned runs.

Stanford got off to a quick start against Utah Valley posting three runs in the first inning. Cassandra Roulund broke the ice with a single to center field that brought home Kayla Bonstrom.

Ashby and Kylie Sorenson followed with RBI-singles of their own to give the Cardinal an early 3-0 lead.

Stanford put up three more runs in the third inning when Leah White put the ball in play to bring Hanna Winter in from third. Lauren Bertoy stepped to the plate and delivered a two-RBI single to extend Stanford’s lead to 6-0.

Utah Valley threatened regularly with runners reaching base but the Cardinal pitching and defense did well halt any potential rally. The Wolverines left 11 runners on base.

Stanford started well against Wichita State as well, producing two runs in the first inning to take the early lead.

Schreyer made her second start on the day and cruised through 2.0 innings with a strikeout and allowing four hits before Snyder entered the game in the third inning. Snyder did well, logging two strikeouts while holding Wichita State to five hits and one walk in 5.0 innings.

Wichita State put together a small rally in the third inning to produce a run and cut Stanford’s lead to 2-1. The Shockers did a majority of their damage in the fifth inning by capitalizing on a Stanford error with two outs to push across three runs and take a 4-2 lead.

Stanford responded immediately with a pair of runs of its own in the bottom half of the stanza when Hanna Winter led off with a single and was brought home by a RBI-triple by Tylyn Wells. Erin Ashby put the ball in play in the following at-bat to bring Wells home at knot the game at 4-4.

The Cardinal was plagued by a pair of errors in the sixth inning that contributed to two more runs for Wichita State, giving the Shockers a 6-4 lead.

Stanford hit the ball hard in the seventh inning but was unable to generate the offense needed to close the gap.

The Cardinal continues tournament play Saturday with games against Northwestern (9 a.m. PT) and Long Beach State (11:30 a.m.).
