TEMPE, Ariz. -- Stanford softball head coach Rachel Hanson started her tenure with the program 1-0, as the Cardinal run-ruled Virginia, 11-3, at the Kajikawa Classic Thursday night. A six-run sixth inning, that included homers from Kayla Bonstrom and Cassandra Roulund, opened up the game for Stanford.
Stanford (1-0) outhit the Cavaliers (0-2), 10-4, in the rout and played errorless defense behind two hurlers. Haley Snyder (1-0) picked up the win by going three innings in relief. The freshman allowed three runs on two hits, after sophomore Madi Schreyer blanked Virginia in the opening three frames.
The ball was jumping off the Cardinal bats early and often in the 2015 campaign opener. Bonstrom, a junior international relations major, and junior human biology major Jessica Plaza each drove home a run in the top of the first on back-to-back doubles.
Senior human biology major Leah White added a two-run triple in the third, before senior communication major Roulund’s home run in the sixth closed the scoring.
Stanford’s 2-6 hitters, comprising of sophomore Bessie Noll, Bonstrom, Plaza, Roulund and White, went 7-17 (.412) with nine RBI, a double, a triple and two home runs in the contest. Noll, Bonstrom and eight-hole hitter Kaitlin Schaberg each had two hits. The Cardinal batted .384 as a team, while holding Virginia to .182.
Virginia’s Madison Labshere came off the bench and hit two homers to drive in all three runs for the Cavaliers.
Stanford is back at the Kajikawa Classic tomorrow against Cal State Northridge at 1 p.m. PT and North Carolina at 5:15 p.m. PT.
