Cardinal Back in Action

STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford sailing team sent teams to both the St. Mary’s Women’s Races in St. Mary’s City, MD, and the Graham Hall Team Races in Annapolis, MD this past weekend.

Skippered by Will La Dow, Hans Henken and Kieran Chung with a crew of Samantha Steele, Nicolette Obel and Haley Kirk, Stanford compiled a record of 13-5 at the Graham Hall Team Race, good for third place.

After a rocky start to the first round with three losses in the first seven races, Stanford ended the round-robin on an eight-race winning streak. The Cardinal then entered a four team playoff which would ultimately decide the championship.

Stanford fell to eventual champions College of Charleston, but bounced back with a win over hosts St. Mary’s. Stanford concluded the event with a loss to Boston College, good enough for third place in the 16 team field.

In nearby Annapolis, the Cardinal finished eighth in the 18 team field. After a rocky start, Stanford went out on a high note after finishing outside of the top five just once in its last seven races.

The Cardinal returns to action next weekend, when they will send four squads to four different cities. The four events that Stanford boats will be racing in include the Aaron Szambecki Team Race in Norfolk, VA, the Duplin Women’s Team race in Medord, MA, the Friis Team Races in Cambridge, MA, and the South Disignate in Los Angeles.
