IOWA CITY, Iowa - Stanford bumped ahead to sixth with 156 points after Friday's action at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by Iowa at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium.
Drew Cosgarea, Thomas Stephens, David Nolan and Tom Kremer clocked in with a school-record 6:14.83 and third-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay, a record that stood since 2009. Nolan went on to finish second in the 100-yard backstroke with a program-best 44.78 in the finals to better volunteer assistant coach Eugene Godsoe's benchmark of 44.93 achieved in 2010. Nolan matched Godsoe's time in the morning when he touched first in the prelims.
Beyond the school recored, Nolan's individual effort moved him into a tie for seventh on the event's all-time list.
Kremer went 1:33.18 in the prelims of the 200-yard freestyle and posted a 1:33.43 in the finals for sixth. Cosgarea's 1:34.47 in the finals gave him a 14th-place finish after recording a 1:33.72 in the morning.
"We received a great 200 free event by both Drew and Tom," said Goldman Family Director of Men's Swimming Ted Knapp. "Both held on to their points in a very talented field. Nolan's school record in the 100 back came with an impressive second-place finish. We were able to finish the evening again on another really good note with a great 800 free relay."

Kristian Ipsen posted 482.40 points for third in the 3-meter event. Ipsen now eyes a podium spot in the platform event to give him an unprecedented 12 All-America honors in his Cardinal career.
Connor Black (23rd) and Andrew Liang (24th) posted respective times of 46.51 and 46.54 in the 100-yard butterfly.
Max Williamson's 3:46.28 gave him a 25th-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley, six spots in front of Danny Thomson (3:48.80).
Stanford was disqualified during the prelims of the 200-yard medley relay and Curtis Ogren was disqualified in the B-finals of the 400-yard individual medley. Ogren was called for not separating his hands before dolphin kicking on the breaststroke pullout. That rule has been changed by FINA, but the NCAA chose not to adopt the rule midway through a season. The new rule, allowing the type of pullout Ogren was called for, will take effect after this season concludes.
