STANFORD, Calif. -- Stanford sophomore lefty Chris Castellanos faced 13 batters and got 13 outs to earn the win in a 10-6 victory over Utah Friday evening at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond. The Cardinal rode Castellanos through the ninth after scoring six runs in the sixth to turn a 6-3 deficit into a 9-3 lead.
Stanford (15-20, 3-10 Pac-12) won its third conference game in its last four outings. Drew Jackson’s career high four hits, including two doubles, led the Cardinal’s 15-hit outburst.
Castellanos (1-0) entered with Utah leading 6-1 in the fifth inning after the Utes plated five in the fourth and one in the fifth, all with two outs. The Long Beach, California, native calmed the Utes bats with a mix of curveballs to keep the opponents hitless over the final 4.1 innings. He walked two and struck out five in the longest outing of his career.
The Cardinal’s hitters flourished with Castellanos getting them off the defensive side quickly. Stanford scored twice in the fifth and broke out for six runs on five hits during a 32-minute bottom of the sixth. Beau Branton had a big two-out two-RBI double to right center to plate the final two runs of the inning, as Stanford sent 11 batter to the plate. Jack Klein, Jonny Locher, Drew Jackson and Matt Winaker also had hits in the frame.
Winaker, Branton and Locher each picked up two hits apiece, along with Zach Hoffpauir. Tommy Edman and Hoffpauir each extended their hitting streaks to six games and Mikey Diekroeger reached for the 10th straight game.
Utah (12-21, 4-9 Pac-12) had the potential to make the lead much larger in the early going. Three base runners were thrown out by catcher Alex Dunlap, whose three assists led Stanford. Utah also committed three errors in the field that accounted for three Cardinal runs.
Wade Gulden, who entered hitting .153, led Utah with three hits. Josh Rose drove home three on a bases-clearing two-out double to deep left center in the fourth.
Stanford and Utah meet again Saturday at 2 p.m. PT and Sunday at 1 p.m. PT. Right-hander Marc Brakeman (0-1, 3.71 ERA) is expected to return from injury tomorrow to start against Dalton Carroll (4-4, 4.50 ERA). The first 750 fans to go to the marketing table Saturday will receive a free Stanford baseball keychain.
