STANFORD, Calif. -- Utah avoided a sweep against the Stanford baseball team by pounding 11 runs on 16 hits Sunday afternoon at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond. The 11-3 loss snapped a five-game winning streak over the Utes for Stanford.

Utah (13-22, 5-10 Pac-12) scored early and often against Cardinal starter Andrew Summerville (3-1), who took the loss. The lefty ended a streak of 12.1 consecutive scoreless innings when the Utes got to him for three in the first and two more in the second inning.

AJ Young doubled home two runs in the first and the Utes never looked back. Young ended up 3-3 with three doubles, four RBI and four runs scored to lead Utah. Kody Davis went 3-3 with a homer, Cole Taylor was 3-5 with five RBI and Wyler Smith had a 4-for-5 day.

Jack Klein had two infield singles and an RBI to lead the Cardinal’s lineup. Eight Cardinal players had hits, but only Klein produced more than one.

Despite totaling zero errors, Stanford’s defense played a negative role in Utah’s offensive production. Fly balls were misplayed in center and right field to turn would-be outs into extra-base hits. Utah had five extra-base knocks against six Stanford pitchers.

Jayson Rose (3-3) was the winning pitcher, going 6.0 innings and allowing three runs on eight hits. Broke Duke threw the final three innings for Utah and allowed only one hit, while strikeout out two and not issuing a walk.

Stanford (16-21, 4-11 Pac-12) won its second straight Pac-12 series by taking the first two games. Drew Jackson was 7-14 (.500) in the three-game set with three doubles, three RBI and five runs scored.

The Cardinal stays home to face California Tuesday and UCLA Friday-Sunday. Pac-12 Networks will carry three of the next four games and ESPNU is scheduled to air Saturday’s game.
