Cardinal Claims PCCSC Title

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford dominated the Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference Women’s Championship this past weekend in Santa Barbara, California, finishing with a minuscule 34 points from 24 races, including 19 victories. Second place UC Santa Barbara finished a distant second with 70 points, followed by Santa Clara, who tallied 96 points.

The Cardinal A-unit, manned by Maeve White and Haley Fox, began the championship with a stumble, finishing third in the opening race. However, they would go on to win nine of their final 11 races, good enough for an 18-point total.

Not to be outdone by its Stanford counterpart, the Cardinal B-squad amassed 10 wins in 12 races, totaling 16 points. After six wins in a row to begin the event, the pair of Yuki Yoshiyasu and Julia Lambert stumbled to finishes of fourth and second, but left on a high note with four straight wins.

Thousands of miles away at the Navy Spring Regatta in Annapolis, Maryland, six of the top 10 coed teams in the nation competed across two divisions in a 20-team field.

In the A-division, in-form senior duo Kieran Chung and Haley Kirk overcame an early 16th-place finish to amass 76 points, just one behind overall champions Georgetown. Stanford’s A-team managed eight top-five finishes in 15 races.

Stanford’s B-squad, skippered by Axel Sly with a crew of Elena VandenBerg and Daniel Ron, overcame a dismal introduction to the weekend to finish third in its division. The start included two 12th-place finishes and one 14th-place finish, but Stanford’s B-boat was outside the top two just five times in its final 12 races.

Stanford is back on the water next weekend when it travels to Cambridge, Massachusetts, to compete in the Boston Dinghy Club Challenge Cup (April 25-26). The following weekend, Stanford will compete in the Mark Healy Coed Conference Championships (May 1-2) in nearby Redwood City.
