STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford junior goalkeeper Gabby Stone was named #GoStanford Student-Athlete of the Week for her performance in the Cardinal's 7-3 victory at rival Cal on Thursday.
Stone’s work in the cage highlighted a dominant defensive effort in No. 1 Stanford’s win in Berkeley. She made eight saves for the ninth time this season in holding the Golden Bears to a season-low three goals.
Stone held Cal scoreless during a decisive third quarter in which Stanford scored four times. The Cardinal converted on three consecutive possessions late in the period and each goal was followed by Stone in perfect position to make a save and preserve the unblemished frame.
Cal’s three goals not only tied a season-low for the Golden Bears, but were also the fewest Stanford has allowed to an MPSF opponent at any point in the season since UCLA put home three in a NCAA semifinal on May 11, 2013.
The win against the Golden Bears, Stanford’s 39th consecutive regular-season MPSF victory, secured the Cardinal’s sixth consecutive unblemished league campaign. Stanford owns the No. 1 seed in this weekend’s conference tournament in Tempe, Arizona by virtue of its 6-0 MPSF record and will head into that first taste of postseason action 21-1 overall and winners of 10 straight.
As the top seed, Stanford has a bye into the semifinals and will play the winner of No. 4 California and No. 5 Arizona State on Saturday, April 25 at 2:30 p.m. Tournament information, including a link to a live stream of all games, can be found here.
