STANFORD, Calif. -- The Stanford baseball team committed a season high five errors that led to seven unearned runs for No. 3 UCLA in a 10-0 loss in front of 1,590 fans at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond Saturday night. The three-game set is even after the Cardinal took Friday’s opener, 6-1.
Stanford (18-22, 5-12 Pac-12) received a good outing from Marc Brakeman as he continues to climb back from an arm injury that sidelined him for 24 games. The right-hander allowed just one earned run on seven hits in the first 5.2 innings, but defensive miscues let the Bruins take a 5-0 lead on the MLB Draft prospect.
Brakeman’s 76 pitches should have stretched him much farther than the sixth if it were not for the errors. It was an uncharacteristic day in the field for the Cardinal, which had committed one or zero errors in nine of its last 10 games.
UCLA (30-9, 15-5 Pac-12) did not plate an earned run until the sixth inning, making the score 4-0. An additional unearned tally in the sixth, three more runs in the seventh, plus two more in the eighth put the game out of reach for Stanford.
The Bruins were led by four batters with multiple hits, including Luke Persico’s 3-for-5 day that was highlighted by two doubles. Darrell Miller Jr. had two hits and three RBI out of the No. 7 hole, while Chris Keck doubled twice and Trent Chatterton had two singles.
Stanford put together serious threats on two occasions, leaving two runners on in the second and the bases loaded in the seventh. Drew Jackson, who ran his hit streak to seven games, and Alex Dunlap both singled twice as part of the Cardinal’s six hits.
Beau Branton moved his hitting streak to 10 games, the longest for Stanford this season, with a single in the second.
Grant Wilson (7-3) was the winner in 6.1 innings on the hill. He allowed only four hits, walked two and struck out three. The lefty threw 91 pitches, 62 for strikes.
UCLA’s talented bullpen went 2.2 innings without allowing a run on two hits. Tucker Forbes got two outs in the seventh, Grant Dyer worked the eighth and David Berg finished off the ninth.
The teams will decide the series tomorrow at 2 p.m. PT. Stanford looks to clinch its fifth straight series win over the Bruins on Pac-12 Networks.
